The nurse has standing orders from the school physician to administer acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Motrin), hydrocortisone cream 1%, cough drops, saline eyewash, Tums antacids, and Benadryl. Whenever possible, a child’s medication should be given at home. The first dose of any medication should always be given at home.
Please contact the nurse as soon as possible if your child needs to be given medication during school hours. All paperwork MUST be on file before any medication can be administered at school. The nurse needs medication orders from the physician and your permission to administer the medication as ordered. This goes for prescription medication as well as over-the-counter medication, even if its an “as needed” medication. The permission forms are available here on my website for you to print as needed. Please be aware that all medication must be delivered to school by a parent or guardian. I cannot accept medication given to me by a student. This includes over-the-counter medication as well as prescription medication. Prescription medications must be in their original pharmacy supplied container with the label intact. Ask the pharmacy to provide you with an extra container to keep at school. The label must include the child’s name, name of the drug, dosage and strength of the medication, directions for administering and the prescriber’s name. Only a 30 day supply of prescription medication can be accepted at a time. Over-the-counter medication must be in the original container. You may also come to school yourself to administer any medication in the Health Office. For prescription medications given for less than 10 days (ex: an antibiotic), the prescription label on the pharmacy container can suffice as a doctor’s order.
